It is well known that milk and milk products have abundant protein but not so well known that this protein called Casein can be the cause of serious health problems in humans.
Casein is the protein found in all mammals’ milk. It is thick and coarse and has strong mucus-forming properties. It also produces a natural opiate called casomorphin after digestion which may lead to a comfort feeling often associated with milk and can even trigger an addictive response that causes food cravings and mood disorders
What’s wrong with Casein Just like any other animal protein Casein can take hours for our bodies to digest and puts a great strain on our digestive system causing constipation, gas, bloating and diarrhea.
There is 300 percent more casein in dairy milk than in human milk. If there is high amount of casein in the diet, the human respiratory system can become clogged and irritated making the body more susceptible to asthma, bronchitis and ear infections.
Casein can also cause allergic reactions in people that range from mild to serious. These include swelling of the lips, face or throat, hives or itchiness of skin and sinus issues like nasal congestion and sneezing. More serious and potentially fatal issues can also occur.
What’s the scientific research on Casein Studies including those by Dr. Karl Reichel, of The National Hospital in Norway, and Dr. Robert Cade of the University of Florida, have found high amounts of the casomorphin peptide in urine samples taken from people with conditions ranging from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and depression to autism and schizophrenia.
Dr. T. Colin Campbell, author of The China Study, one of the most comprehensive studies on nutrition, found casein to be the most relevant cancer promoter ever discovered and that the amount of cancer growth could be controlled based on the amount of casein in the diet.
Dr. Neal Barnard, M.D. of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine found in various studies that Casein is a common trigger for rheumatoid arthritis and joint pain and people often find that their pain disappears when dairy products are removed from their diet.
There is now growing evidence that everyone can benefit from a dairy and casein free diet. If you still think a glass of milk, a cup of yogurt or a small serving of cheese will not cause any harm, think again.
