Growing up in a north Indian household in the seventies, Madhu Roy studied Foods and Nutrition at Lady Irwin College, New Delhi, where she developed a lively interest in cooking and health. There she learned about the nutritive value of foods, deficiency diseases, diets and the chemistry of food preparation.
Putting that 'healthy' knowledge to work for her family she not only insisted on milk and milk products but also happily made eggs and meat a part of their diet for 'better' calcium and protein. Then came the fast food wave and eating out became popular with its high oil, salt and sugar content. Huge food stores came up with hundreds of processed foods.
At the same time visits to the doctor became frequent for allergies and infections. Medications only suppressed symptoms with harmful side effects. In an effort to find safer treatment options she also found increasing evidence of processed and animal based foods as a major cause of health problems. She came to learn that lactose intolerance is a common condition and that milk can cause acidity, constipation, allergies, heart disease and even diabetes.
The turning point came when she became aware of the filthy conditions in which animals are bred and slaughtered
for the meat, milk and egg industry, the hormones and antibiotics used and the cruelty and suffering inflicted
on these sentient beings.
To make the transition easier she started working on plant based alternatives
in her kitchen starting with curd, an integral part of most Indian meals,
and created a product that was highly appreciated by family and friends
who encouraged her to make it available to others.
And the Roy's Vegan family venture was born! To provide everyone with
healthy and authentic alternatives that create comfort and taste delicious
at the same time. Apart from our flagship organic product, the Artisanal
Soy Cashew Curd, future plans include dairy free milks, dips, cheese
and sweets that are also organic and free of chemicals and preservatives.
Of new learnings and wonders of creating!
